Sloan Wilson wrote this in the 1950’s, and it very much reflects the era, but what’s interesting is how, even though it’s a "very 50’s" book, it’s full of thoughts, topics, conversations that could happen right now exactly as they did then. Tom Rath is in his early 30’s, works in New York, lives in Connecticut, is married, two kids, living what seems like it should be a peaceful American dream. But he’s haunted by his experiences in World War II, both the war and an affair he can’t forget. His grandmother, domineering and wealthy, plays a significant role long after her demise. After a while, we stop hoping for the best for these interesting characters, who find themselves caught up in circumstances neither unusual nor ordinary.
